Andhra Pradesh government, which is utilising all kinds of platforms to promote Brand Amaravati across the globe, is now gearing up to utilise the ensuing 12-day Krishna Pushkarams, beginning on August 12, to promote Brand Amaravati in a big way.
A series of events, including tourism promotion events, cultural programmes, laser shows and food festivals are being planned during the 12-day mega event.
“This is the first Krishna Pushkarams which will be organised in the capital region in the reorganised state and chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu wants to make the river festival a memorable event. We are, therefore, making all-out efforts to make the event successful,” principal secretary (endowments) JSV Prasad has said.
Prasad, who is supervising the arrangements for the Pushkarams, held a review meeting with senior officials of the departments concerned at the Secretariat here on Thursday.
“We want to utilise the event to promote Amaravati and all the important tourism, cultural and religious centres situated in the districts of Krishna, Guntur and Kurnool where the festival is being held. We want people to not only take part in the Pushkarams but also see other religious and tourist places,” he said.
According to Prasad, four projects are coming up in the Amaravati region under the Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spirituality Augmentation Drive (PRASAD), which will help in the beautification of the capital region. Under PRASAD, the Centre has sanctioned about Rs 40 crore which will be utilised for the Amaravati heritage development project, development of Sri Amaralingeswra Swami temple, lighting of the 125-foot-tall Buddha statue in the capital region and the river front development project.

Soaring Above the Water: The Vision for Seaplane Services in Andhra Pradesh
Andhra Pradesh, a state blessed with a vast coastline and an intricate network of rivers and water bodies, is poised to take a significant leap in tourism and regional connectivity with the proposed seaplane service. This ambitious project aims to link major destinations like Vijayawada, Kakinada, and Vizag, offering a unique and scenic mode of travel for tourists and locals alike.
While the service is not yet fully operational, it has been a topic of considerable discussion and a subject of a high-profile trial run, signaling a strong commitment from the state government to make this vision a reality.
The Big Picture: What is the Project?
The seaplane project is part of a broader government initiative to leverage the state's natural waterways to enhance tourism and provide air connectivity to remote areas. Under the central government's UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik) scheme, several seaplane routes have been identified across the country, with Andhra Pradesh having a significant share of them. The plan involves establishing "water aerodromes"—designated areas for seaplane takeoffs and landings—at various locations.
The proposed service connecting Vijayawada, Kakinada, and Vizag is a key part of this plan, intended to create a seamless travel circuit that links three of the state's most important urban centers and tourist hubs.
A Glimpse into the Future: The Trial Run
A major milestone for the project was the trial run conducted in late 2024. A De Havilland amphibious aircraft, operated by SpiceJet, conducted a successful test flight from the Prakasam Barrage in Vijayawada to the Srisailam reservoir. This demonstration, attended by key government officials, proved the technical viability of seaplane operations in the state's water bodies.
While the trial run was a success, it was a one-off event and not the start of commercial operations.
Current Status: Progress and Challenges
The project is currently in the techno-economic feasibility study phase. This detailed study is a crucial step to evaluate the technical and economic viability of the proposed routes. It involves a thorough analysis of factors such as:
Site Viability: Assessing water depth, currents, and wind patterns at the proposed water aerodrome locations.
Infrastructure Needs: Determining the requirements for building floating jetties and other ground infrastructure.
Economic Viability: Analyzing projected passenger traffic, revenue models, and operational costs to ensure the long-term sustainability of the service.
Regulatory Clearances: Securing necessary approvals from civil aviation and environmental agencies.
The state government has invited bids for these detailed studies, a process that is known to be time-consuming. Officials have stated that full-fledged operations will only begin after the feasibility of each site is established and all necessary clearances are obtained.
What This Means for Travelers
While we wait for the service to be officially launched, the potential benefits for travelers are immense:
Scenic Travel: Seaplanes offer a unique and breathtaking perspective of the coastal landscapes and rivers of Andhra Pradesh. The journey itself would be a key part of the travel experience.
Reduced Travel Time: This service would significantly cut down travel time between cities, bypassing road traffic and offering a much faster alternative to conventional modes of transport.
Boost to Tourism: The seaplane service has the potential to attract a new segment of tourists seeking adventure and unique travel experiences, thereby giving a major boost to the state's tourism industry.
Looking Ahead
The seaplane service is a promising initiative that holds the potential to transform travel and tourism in Andhra Pradesh. While the project is moving ahead with careful, measured steps, the successful trial run and the ongoing feasibility studies show a clear path forward. Once launched, this service will not only enhance connectivity but also position Andhra Pradesh as a pioneer in water-based aviation, opening up a new era of travel and exploration.
