The New Terminal at Vijayawada Airport
Gateway to a New Era: The New Terminal at Vijayawada Airport
Vijayawada International Airport (VGA), also known as Gannavaram Airport, is undergoing a major transformation with the construction of a new integrated terminal building. This significant infrastructure project is designed to handle increasing passenger traffic and position the airport as a key aviation hub in Andhra Pradesh.
While the existing interim terminal has served its purpose, the new facility promises a leap forward in capacity, amenities, and passenger experience. This blog post provides a comprehensive look at the new terminal, its features, and its impact on the region.
Key Details of the New Terminal
The new integrated terminal is a substantial project with a planned investment of ₹611.80 crore by the Airports Authority of India (AAI). Its construction, which began in late 2018, is expected to be completed by June 2025.
Size and Capacity: The new terminal will be a modern steel and glass structure spanning approximately 35,000 square meters. It's designed to handle up to 1,200 passengers during peak hours, accommodating both domestic (800) and international (400) passengers.
Enhanced Facilities: To streamline passenger flow, the terminal will be equipped with 24 check-in counters, 14 immigration counters, three customs counters, and six aerobridges that can accommodate large, wide-body aircraft like the Boeing 777.
Convenience and Comfort: The new facility will also feature five conveyor belts for baggage claim, a large parking area for up to 1,250 vehicles, and a design that is intended to reflect the rich cultural heritage of Andhra Pradesh, with plans for a Kuchipudi-themed interior.
Impact on the Region
The completion of the new terminal will have a transformative effect on Vijayawada and the surrounding region. It will not only increase air connectivity but also significantly boost tourism and economic development. The enhanced capacity is expected to attract more airlines to the region, offering a wider range of flight options for both business and leisure travelers. By improving accessibility and streamlining services, the new terminal will further cement Vijayawada's role as a major hub in India's rapidly growing aviation network.
