Lepakshi Temple – Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh

The Lepakshi Temple, also known as Veerabhadra Temple, is one of the most iconic historical and spiritual sites in Andhra Pradesh. Located in Lepakshi village, Anantapur district, the temple is a masterpiece of Vijayanagara architecture and is famous for its intricate carvings, hanging pillar, murals, and myths connected to the Ramayana.

Built in the 16th century by the brothers Virupanna and Viranna, this temple is dedicated to Veerabhadra Swamy (an incarnation of Lord Shiva). It is also home to beautiful shrines of Lord Vishnu, Parvati, and other deities.

Highlights of Lepakshi Temple

  • Hanging Pillar – A unique engineering marvel where one pillar hangs in the air without touching the ground.

  • Nandi Statue – One of the largest monolithic Nandi statues in India, carved from a single block of granite.

  • Murals & Frescoes – Exquisite paintings depicting stories from the Ramayana, Mahabharata, and Puranas.

  • Nagalinga – A massive Shivalinga sheltered under a seven-hooded serpent, a major attraction.

  • Mythological Significance – Believed to be the place where the wounded bird Jatayu fell while trying to rescue Sita from Ravana, hence the name “Lepakshi” (meaning “Rise, O Bird”).
