Mori Smart Digital village in Andhra Pradesh

Nestled in the Sakhinetipalli mandal of East Godavari district, Mori is a small cashew-exporting village that has made headlines by becoming one of India’s earliest and most successful examples of a Smart Digital Village. With digital infrastructure, cashless transactions, and tech-enabled services now a part of everyday life, Mori offers a compelling blueprint for rural transformation in the 21st century.

What Makes Mori Smart & Digital

1. Infrastructure & Connectivity

  • All 1,189 households in Mori were provided with fibre-optic internet at ~15 Mbps, telephone connections, WiFi, and a cable TV service featuring approximately 250 channels.

  • The monthly cost is around ₹149 per home for the combined services.

2. Digital Literacy & Cashless Transactions

  • Mori boasts 100% digital literacy among villagers.

  • All households and small businesses/cornershops have been enabled to transact via e-banking, RuPay cards, and POS (Point of Sale) machines.

3. Sustainable & Smart Solutions

  • Technology partners like Google, Cisco, IBM, and Ericsson have been involved in pilot projects such as Smart Water Grid Management, IoT-based agricultural tools, and Connected Aquaponics.

  • LED street lighting was introduced to reduce energy consumption.

4. Social and Sanitary Indicators

  • The village has been declared Open Defecation Free (ODF). Each household has its own sanitary facility.

  • Residents were given smartphones and training for digital payments, net banking, and usage of apps.

Impact on Daily Life & Economy

  • Agriculture & Local Trade: Farmers can monitor water supply, use digital tools for yield calculations, and access markets online.

  • Financial Inclusion: With every household having bank access and cashless options, villagers face fewer hurdles for remittance or bill payments.

  • Quality of Life: Digital classrooms, internet-based learning, and cable TV bring global connections and entertainment.

Challenges & What’s Next

  • Sustainability: Ensuring consistent internet uptime and affordability over time.

  • Scalability: Replicating Mori’s model in villages with varied geography and demographics.

  • Training & Adoption: Bridging the gap for older residents or those with lower literacy levels.

Why Mori Matters

Mori shows that even small rural communities can leapfrog traditional limitations when provided with the right digital tools, infrastructure, and support. It was one of the early village models powered by FiberNet/Triple Play services in India and sets a precedent for Smart Digital Villages under Indian rural development policy

Conclusion

Mori has turned from a modest cashew-exporting village into a model for digital transformation. What began as a pilot of internet and cable services has expanded to encompass cashless transactions, sustainable tech solutions, and improved livelihoods. For those interested in rural development, smart villages, or using technology for social good, Mori is an inspiring case study.

The Visakhapatnam–Tirupati AC Double Decker Express (train nos. 22707 / 22708) is a one-of the overnight superfast service operated by South Coast Railways, connecting two vibrant cities of Andhra Pradesh.

Highlights:

  • Launched: 31 December 2016

  • Route: Runs between Visakhapatnam (VSKP) and Tirupati (TPTY), covering approximately 761 km.

  • Frequency: Operates on a tri-weekly schedule — typically Monday, Thursday, and Saturday.

  • Journey Time: Averages 13 hours 10 minutes to 13 hours 30 minutes depending on halts and schedule.

  • Speed: Clocking an average of ~58 km/h including halts.

Insights & Future Potential

  • The overnight journey with seated accommodations might be a downside for some—13+ hours of seated travel isn't ideal for everyone. Still, many travel enthusiasts enjoy the unique experience and panoramic views.

  • With only 11 coaches, demand during peak seasons (festivals, holidays) can lead to waitlists. Proposals have been made to augment the train with additional AC coaches to handle rush effectively.

  • On a broader note, there's growing buzz and speculation around introducing a Vande Bharat Express on this very corridor, which could transform travel between Visakhapatnam and Tirupati, especially for pilgrims to the famous Tirumala temple.

The Visakhapatnam–Tirupati AC Double Decker Express is more than just a train—it’s a symbol of innovation, scenic overnight travel, and a solution carved to meet regional demand. flamingo festival at Nellore

NELLORE: A rich cultural and visual treat awaits the visitors, youth, schoolchildren and bird enthusiasts as the district authorities have made necessary arrangements for the ‘Flamingo festival’ to be held in the lake town, Sullurupeta, in Nellore district here from Tuesday to Thursday.

Musical nights, dance events and a variety of cultural programmes will be held during the three days with noted performers such as S.P. Balasubrahmanyam.

The forest department staff are making necessary arrangements at the Pulicat and Nelapattu bird sanctuaries for the convenience of the visiting tourists and the public.

Visual treat

Following recent rains under the impact of the Vardah cyclone, Pulicat lake, which received considerable inflows from the local streams, has been attracting a large number of Flamingo migratory birds for the past 10 days. These birds with their striking curve beaks and flame-coloured plumage present a seasonal treat on either side of the Sullurupeta-Sriharikota road.

The officials developed viewing towers at several points and resting areas on the Sriharikota road to help bird enthusiasts take a leisurely look at the bird life in the sanctuary.

Boat racing

As a token of appreciation for the annual bird festival, Nellore-based miniature artist Sk. Musavir carved tiny replicas of Flamingo birds out of a sea shell.

Another important feature of the bird festival is the boat racing to be held for the fishermen of the Pulicat lake habitations. The race is held at the boating point developed at Bheemunivaripalem village near the national highway.

Nelapattu bird sanctuary is another venue that woos bird festival visitors as it is home to hundreds and thousands of migratory and native birds. It is located near Doravarisatram on the national highway, nearly 20 km away from Sullurupeta town.

Viewing towers and visitor pathways had been developed on the bund of Nelapattu water body.

On the baringtonia trees in this water body, Pelicans and other migratory birds form nests and brood during this season. Lesser number of Pelicans is sighted this season due to prolonged dry spell prior to cyclone.

The different features of bird life and Nelapattu sanctuary specialities will be on display during the festival.

The officials of Sathish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC), also known as Sriharikota Range (SHAR), are making arrangements for organising their own exhibition stall at the festival venue in Sullurupeta as part of their participation in it over the years.

Parasailing on Krishna river from Today

AMARAVATI: The Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation is introducing parasailing on the Krishna river, upstream of the Prakasam barrage, from December 3rd and 4th to attract tourists.

Currently, trials are being conducted. According to Mr T.V.N. Rao, Executive Director of the corporation, Vijayawada will be the second place in the State to have the adventure sport, the first being Hyderabad (Hussainsagar) where there is a good response.

The parasail boat, with a 200 HP engine, is being imported from South Korea and the parachute from Australia. Mounted on the boat is a hydraulic winch to operate the parasail. A wind speed of five to 20 knots is ideal for para sailing and, if the speed goes down below five, the parasail does not go up. If it goes beyond 20 knots, the sail gets too shaky, he explained.

Mr Rao added that Bhavani island in the Krishna river was being developed as a tourist spot at a cost of Rs 3 crore. Eighteen cottages, a restaurant, a conference hall and a plaza will be built on the island.
